LinkedIn shows about the first three lines of a post and hides the rest behind a "see more" link. At the desktop column width that is roughly the first 210 characters. On a phone, which is where most of the feed is actually read, it is roughly 140. Miss that line and the rest of your post is a tap nobody makes.
The cut is not purely a character count, which is why most counters get it wrong. LinkedIn cuts on lines, and a blank line still costs a line. A post written as five short paragraphs can be thirty characters long and still get cut after the second one. This tool measures whichever limit is hit first, the characters or the three lines.

How this measuresThe struck-through text is what sits behind "see more". The cut uses two limits and stops at whichever comes first: about 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile, or three rendered lines, with a long line counting as however many lines it wraps to. LinkedIn also collapses runs of blank lines down to one and trims trailing whitespace before it renders, so this tool does the same before it counts. That is why the character count here can be lower than the one in your editor.
LinkedIn does not publish its exact cutoff. Treat the marked point as a close approximation, not a guarantee.
What to do with the first two lines
The visible part is the only part most people ever see, so it has to do the whole job of earning the tap. Three things move that line without rewriting the post:
- Put the claim first, not the setup. "Here is something I have been thinking about lately" burns the entire visible budget on nothing.
- Watch the blank lines. A blank line after your opening sentence costs you one of three lines. Sometimes that is worth it for the white space, and sometimes it hides your second best sentence.
- Check the mobile setting, not just desktop. The gap between the two is about seventy characters, which is most of a sentence. A post that reads well on desktop is regularly cut mid-thought on a phone.
Nothing here is sent anywhere
This page has no server component, no account, no cookie, no analytics beacon and no storage. The measuring is a few dozen lines of JavaScript that ship with the page and run in your browser. Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool still works exactly the same.
